Your energy audit
To prepare for your home energy audit, gather a year's worth of energy bills and create a list for your contractor of the problem areas (drafty rooms, safety concerns) in your home.
Home Performance with ENERGY STAR begins with a home energy audit. A trained contractor will use state-of-the-art equipment to test your home's:
- Insulation levels
- Typical problem areas such as your attic or basement
- Heating, cooling and water heating systems
- Utility bills from the past year.*
*This data will help you understand the seasonal trends and patterns of your home's energy consumption.
The contractor will also perform a series of diagnostic tests, including:
Insulation: Materials used to keep air from the home inside and keep outside air out and greatly reduces heating and cooling bills.
Energy audit: An evaluation of a home to see where energy is being lost and how efficiently current heating and cooling systems as well as appliances are operating.
